Top 10 facts about Adam Lambert (AKA the Adam Lambert incident)

Picture the scene – a cold Tuesday night in York, nothing on TV. I was channel flicking and stumbled across the closing performance of the MTV EMAs. Queen were performing with a singer who I’d never heard of before – Adam Lambert.

Every once in a while, an artist comes along with a voice that makes you stop in your tracks. It was only after the after the performance had finished that I realised I’d actually stopped what I was doing to give this guy my full attention.

I went to my favourite source of information to find out more:

http://twitter.com/#!/markgilroymusic/status/134011061501313024

I was completely unprepared for what happened next.

Within 48 hours I’d received 516 messages, been retweeted 349 times (reaching a total audience of over 303,000 people), and picked-up 218 incredible new followers.

Since asking that question, I’ve spent a great deal of time this week listening to Adam Lambert tracks and watching YouTube videos of live performances. I’ve also been sent some wonderful messages from Adam’s twitter fans – the ‘Glamberts’ or ‘Glamily’ as they like to be known. I thought a great way to find out more would be to look at some great facts about Adam, so I tweeted another question:

http://twitter.com/#!/markgilroymusic/status/134345598764724224

This was met with much the same response as before.

After many, many messages from the Glamily, here are my Top 10 facts about Adam Lambert:

  1. In 2011, beat competition from Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber & Snoop Dogg,  to win the MTV O Award for ‘Must Follow Artist on Twitter’.
  2. Adam is an opera-trained liggerio-tenor who can hold a note for 22 seconds.
  3. His ‘porn name’ (pet’s first name + mother’s maiden name) is Maggie Longfellow.
  4. Although Adam was runner-up in Season 8 of American Idol, he has gone on to earn more than many of the winners, before or since. He made Forbes list for being the the 2nd highest earning American Idol (tied with Daughtry) at $6 million.
  5. He is naturally a redhead.
  6.  For his 29th birthday he asked fans to donate to Charity:Water, saying he would like to raise $29K. That was raised in a matter of hours. In total $323K was raised. To date, Adam’s fans have donated more than $1 million, in his name, to such charities as The Trevor Project, Charity:Water and Donors Choose.
  7. Adam is the first talent show contestant to be asked to sing the theme to a major film before even releasing any of his own material. In July 2009, he recorded ‘Time for Miracles’ for the film ‘2012’ that was released in November 2009, two weeks before his album.
  8. The only US Idol contestant to tour worldwide after releasing his first album.
  9. During Season 8 of American Idol, Adam Lambert performed ‘Mad World’ and received a rare standing ovation from Simon Cowell. Earlier in the competition, his version of ‘Tracks of my Tears’ received a standing ovation from Smokey Robinson.
  10. Counts Meat Loaf among his celebrity fans: Meat Loaf recently said in an interview: “Adam Lambert is the only singer that I’ve ever thought was amazing. I think there have been great singers, you know, Freddie Mercury, Steven Tyler, you know, a lot of great rock singers. Michael Jackson was one, but Adam Lambert is one I haven’t been awestruck with since [Janis] Joplin in the ’60s. I don’t think anybody actually comprehends how good this guy is. I mean, I downloaded everything he did for “American Idol.” I’m like this Adam Lambert groupie.”

My apologies if I forgot any really important ones – feel free to add more of your favourite facts in the comments box!

Signing off now – after a crazy week, in which I’ve picked-up a ton of new twitter pals, discovered a new artist…and become a Glambert.

  1. One more Glambert follower to follow you.you have lots of catching up to do.Wait until you hear him sing live.Your life will neverbe the same again!

  2. LOVE this SFM!!!
But I would like to clarify your #2 example:
I have just checked – in CTMBTM he holds a phrase for 21 seconds – and what makes it even more impressive is that it is sung softly which takes incredible, I repeat INCREDIBLE control!!!!
He was only 22 when he sang this – LIVE on stage – no recording tricks, no 2nd takes…. Shows his technical ability and classical training perfectly.
Never fails to give me goosebumps and I have played it to classically trained singers, without saying who it is, and they have been extremely impressed – no exception.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJYyqzUr6jU (the phrase I’m referring to is 3.22 – 3.43)

      • His diction is impeccable,”give me your lips, crisp and finished and his phrasing, breath control and perfect pitch is so stunning it brang tears to my eyes. Every time he performed that song the cast would stand in the wings, transfixed. Adam also got great reviews playing with Val Kilmer in the theatrical production of The Ten Commandments as Joshua. His performance so passionate and powerful it’s spine tingling. He also played Fyero in Wicked, which is also on You tube. In sharp contrast is his American Idol Tour rock version of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love and his Fantasy Springs sexy slow, bluesy version which is incredible. He also did a Regaee version off the top of his head when it was his drummer’s last night on the GlamNation Tour. Check out Ring of Fire. His voice soars and he can sing any genre with ease and authenticity. He’s the most exciting man I have ever seen. Seeing him live is an out of body experience! He electrifies the room and you forget to breathe. He’s also funny, friendly and has a beautiful, giving spirit. Welcome to the Glamily! You won’t be disappointed, you’ll become addicted and obsessed! Thanks for the great article! Did you hear Adam sing the first Queen song at the MTVEMA’s, “The Show Must Go On?” It will blow you away.He never acknowleged who he was. He kept the focus on Queen and honoring them. That is the generous performer that we love.

    • Eri, I have told so many people about “Come to Me, Bend to Me.” Then for contract I say try, “Heaven on their Minds” or “What’s Going On.” He is the first singer I have ever followed so closely. He can sing opera and then turn around and sing classic rock or pop. He is the best singer out there and everyone should know this. I’m sick of the Biebers, Perrys, Spears. He is the real deal.

  3. YAY, Mark!!! 😀 Thanks for the post!!!
One more significant fact too – Adam was the first (and only I think) contestant on AI to return as a mentor the year after he was on!! He mentored the Elvis week on AI s9 and did a fab job!! 😀

    • You’re correct he has been the only mentor, and his performance the following night was the best ever version (imo) he’s done of WWFM. I’ve always loved it live in concert, loved the video when single released, and the acoustic version during promo tour, but on this night we knew he ‘broke Idol forever’ and left it shattered all over that stage. Love it that he’s always changing up even his own game.

  4. “Within 48 hours I’d received 516 messages, been retweeted 349 times (reaching a total audience of over 303,000 people), and picked-up 218 incredible new followers.” ~ Mark Gilroy

Mark, let me introduce you to the finer points of Glamspeak.
What you described above, that I’ve included in quotes, is commonly called a Glamswarm.

This can occur when you do something incredibly wonderful and the Glam army surrounds you by the hundreds of thousands and wishes you nothing but happiness and joy!

On the other hand, a Glamswarm can also occur when you do something incredibly stupid and the Glam army surrounds you by the millions and beats you to a bloody pulp, both verbally and physically.

Considering you are a newly-minted Adam Lambert flailing-fan, you can see yourself blessed that this Glamswarm you have experienced is only to give you Glamhugs and silvery glitter-sprinkled Glamsmooches!

Hang around long enough and you’ll begin to pick up other Glamspeak essentials such as UNF, OMFG, GAHHHHH and NNNNGHHHH! For an exact translation, read my Twitterfeed on any given day for examples of how each of these can be used in the most effective manner.

Wishing you an interesting journey down the rabbit hole with us, Mark!
    Ciao,
    Bren

  5. Hi Mark, welcome to the Glamily. Here’s one you may have heard. Slash only went on American Idol as a mentor because of Adam. He had heard him, was blown away, and contacted a friend who worked at Idol and asked if he could come watch Adam. They then asked him to be a mentor on rock week. Here’s an interview with him talking about him.

    • In addition, Adam’s performance of Whole Lotta Love on Idol was the first time Led Zeppelin had ever approved the use of one of their songs on Idol, and Simon Cowell got special permission from U2 for Adam to perform One during the final competition show. You can see the kind of respect Adam gets from some of the best musicians in the world!

  6. Nice job with your facts. #1 was funny when we were trying to get him nominated on the ballot for twitter must follow. Sure there were lots of comments of adoration, how much he lovingly and amusingly interacts and keeps fans up to date with happenings, but I think they especially liked the repeated example of turtle porn he tweeted one day as ‘inspiration’ while in studio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0A77rohcyg

You certainly are an official Glambert now, and did a great job listing well known facts by anyone that has been a part of his fan base for awhile. I enjoyed all his Idol performances, so it would be hard to list my favorite. One question that always gets posed at some point again is …when did we first become really ‘hooked’? For me it was early on with ‘Satisfaction’. Till this day, still can’t get enough of Adam Lambert;)

    • there is something missing at the end note (glory note) of this video – or its been altered slightly. I have both performances and the encore has a higher glory note, but the judged performance was not lacking – that is certain.
I’ve played both from my archives and I am positive this one is missing the high note – only thing I can think of is the ending here is the rehearsal snip where he holds back a bit – usually played at the end of the Idol voting shows to summarize the contestents – yep thats what it is – because thats where that sexy shot comes from at the end.

  7. Awww love hearing stories from new people just discovering Adam! Lulz that you got hit with the full force of an enthusiastic fandom high on the sheer joy of Adam singing his damn face off with the legendary Queen. Woops. Welcome!

A+ list btw, lol I had completely forgotten Adam’s porn name. Hope you have fun discovering fresh some of the sheer tonnage of his incredible performances and entertaining interviews on youtube. Adam’s got a voice like WOAH and a personality that never stops being either sweet as hell or hilariously entertaining. I’ve been stanning the dude for more than 2 years now and you’d think I’d be bored but instead I’m jonesing for whatever surprise he’s got planned for us next.

  8. Thanks, Mark, for a fun article. Hope you enjoy the journey as a Glambert — it’s a real rollercoaster. And that’s just talking about his hair!

  9. Welcome to the glamily! On point 8, not only did Adam tour internationally … he headlined said tour and it sold out most of the venues. Look forward to reading more of your writings.

  10. Huge Queen fan here, and ever since he appeared on Idol, I have hoped to one day hear Adam perform “properly” with Queen (the Idol finale doesn’t count, I always felt he restrained himself there so he wouldn’t overshadow the other finalist). Just so fabulous to hear Adam with Queen last week.

If we are going back to Adam’s Idol performances, there were so many good ones with gorgeous vocals. It’s hard to choose a favourite, but I think this might be mine:

I think these were also especially impressive:

Who am I kidding? *All* his performances were impressive. Glad to read you’re enjoying them too.

    • A Change is Gonna Come to me is his best performance on Idol next to Whole Lotta Love or Born to Be Wild. Everyone loved Mad World, but really anyone could sing that. The world’s musical ear doesn’t seem to be sophisticated enough to see what we see.

  11. Welcome to the asylum. We like it here.

One point of correction – Adam sang “Mad World” twice on Idol. The first time was for the Top 8 performance episode. He performed last, and the episode had run way over, so instead of commenting, Simon gave him that standing ovation. He did sing again on the finale competition, with a somewhat different arrangement because Adam never sings the same song the same way twice.

  12. I love how merely hearing Adam sing for the first time spawns worldwide events like your experience. And it actually give me a chuckle that a few of your favourite:”facts” are a slightly garbled version of the truth. The only one I would correct is that Adam’s classically trained voice is properly classified as a liggerio tenor, singing slightly higher than a conventional operatic tenor, not a counter tenor.
Enjoy your ride as a newly-on-board glambert. It gets a little bit bumpy at times but it’s always a thrill.

  13. Thanks so much for this article. Adam with Queen was an incredible performance. It stopped me in my tracks. Just wow.

I follow Adam on twitter (the only reason I got it) and notice he is forever promoting other artists or congratulating other artists for thier awards won…I think that in itself is the most amazing fact of all. Shows the person he is. Not something you see anymore.

  14. Welcome to this fabulous fandom Mark and thanks for a great write up ! You will continually be amazed at the talent and the person that Adam is My wish for you is that you get to see a live performance, you will never be the same !

  15. LOL, welcome to the Glamily! Always great to see someone else reliving the Damascus experience we all had when we first saw Adam on Idol!

I think this is the pre-Idol performance of Heaven on their Minds that always makes my jaw drop the most:

Utterly phenomenal. I swear, he must have a third lung in there to be able to do what he does vocally.

By the way, love your funky cover of Crazy – good job!

  16. Thanks for the fantastic article, Mark!

It’s great to see that you, a fellow Brit, has become a Glambert. Adam is truly an amazing artist and person. Thank you, Mark!

  17. Thank you so much for this article Mark…and welcome to the fandom! So happy to see that you’ve discovered the glorious talent that is Adam Lambert. As you catch up on his career, you will be blown away by not only his incredible talent, but by what a truly beautiful person and wonderful spirit that he is. As you’ve probably gathered by now, we are passionate about our love for him. There is so much more to Adam than what you see, so have fun getting to know him. You’ll quickly come to understand our devotion to this amazing person.

  18. Once you listen to his songs & learn about his charities how could you not become a Glambert??
Welcome to the Glamily Mark. Xxxxx

  19. To clarify the “porn name”, Adam IS NOT a porn star! You take the name of your first pet, and the name of the first street you lived on, and there you have it! (Mine is Penny Pine!)

    • LOL! I was going to leave a similar comment, lest the uninitiated get the wrong idea. In fact, he’s so far from a porn star, that the most skin he ever shows onstage – much to the chagrin of his audience 🙂 – is arms and a hint of torso if his shirt rucks up. And he’s quick to tuck and rebutton if there’s ever the slightest “wardrobe malfunction”. His modesty vs his raw sexual suggestiveness is one of the personality contradictions we find so endearing about him.

(BTW, mine would be Candy Barclay – not bad 🙂

  20. Welcome to the Glamily, Mark! I, also, just wanted to correct one little fact. In #9, Simon did not give a rare standing ovation, he gave his ONLY standing O ever in 9 years of judging American Idol.

Also, I want to thank Dave for posting Ring of Fire. This performance was so polarizing, but it seems to be the one performance that sent most fans over the moon for Adam. His vocals, again, are pure perfection, and there had never been anything like this on white bread American Idol. So, it bears re-posting.

  21. Per Brian May after hearing Adam in the recording studio. Brian was there visting Rob Cavallo who was working with Adam.

“And I was privileged to hear a track that the guys have finished for Adam Lambert … a song for a forthcoming film, 2012. I have to say I was completely blown away … it’s truly sensational. In fact it’s so obviously a number one smash, any bookie would be mad to take bets on it. I am not kidding. I’m not easily moved to jelly by male vocalists … but Adam’s voice reaches out with sensitivity, depth, maturity, and awesome range and power which will make jaws drop all around the world. Its an awesome performance. No doubt about it. The world of Rock has a bright new star.”

Here is what famed producer Rob Cavallo said about Adam in an interview with Yahoo Music.

“Adam is one of the most gifted singers I have ever recorded. He has a “limitless range”. He can sing every note on the guitar from the lowest to the highest.”

    Interview is here http://www.fanpop.com/spots/adam-lambert/videos/8625927/title/producer-rob-cavallo-talks-about-adams-cd

When Adam was on American Idol Katy Perry was a guest singer she wore a cape with “Adam Lambert” bedazzled across the back.

Slash contacted Idol producers to get a seat in the audience so he could check out Adam’s singing. Producers asked him to be on the show. He agreed because he wanted to work with Adam. In several interviews he praised Adam.

There has been so much praise for his unique vocals. The list goes on and on.

  22. May I add more. This is what Brian May’s thought about Adam when he heard Time for Miracle: “And I was privileged to hear a track that the guys have finished for Adam Lambert … a song for a forthcoming film, 2012. The world of Rock has a bright new star. ”
    http://www.brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssbaug09a.html

Besides his enormous talent, Adam is a real sweetheart and humorous. You should watch his interviews as well, very entertaining. But the biggest fact is he inspires us to be true to who we are and to think positive

  23. Mark
What a great blog! Thank you so much for reaching out to Adam’s fans to learn more. He is a rare talent and an exceptional human being! Btw, another big fan of his is Meatloaf who said that Adam is the most amazing singer he has ever heard.

  24. Mark – thank you for writing this blog! Is is exciting to discover someone as extraordinary as AL – isn’t it?
Here is my little contribution to your process of AL immersion (this was Adam’s first independent one-of concert after the AI:

and please, please check out Adam’s own music! Look for the Glam nation Tour vids (GNT) – what a treat – every concert was different!

You are a musician as well and I would love to hear you perform – any recommendations? Where can I find them?

  25. Welcome to the Glamily! I can’t believe that no one has mentioned that Adam received a Grammy nomination this year for best male vocalist, for his first hit single, Whataya Want From Me from his debut album, For Your Entertainment. Also, in addition to being the first Idol to have his own headlining tour, which was world wide and included 112 performances, he released a DVD of his live performance, GlamNation Live, that is close to going gold. It is incredible, and shows what an amazing performer Adam is.

  26. Mark, Good to see you mentioned the International GN Tour because
the world adores Adam with a passion! He has music reached platinium and double platinium all over the globe, which isn’t surprising as Adam has so many loyal, totally devoted fans who love and support him. So wonderful to see you too have fallen under the power of the greatest entertainer on the planet. Just wait until the next album drops! Everyone is breathless waiting in anticipation for the magic that is Adam Lambert! He is a superstar!

  27. Welcome. Check Adam on Majors & Minors this Sunday in the US. It will be posted on all the fan sites. Make sure you watch Adams performance set when he toured with American Idol. You will be blown away. Adam wants so much to meet David Bowie. Following Adam makes me feel so young at heart. Can’t get enough of his magic.

  28. Mark …. welcome! 🙂

Just to give you an insight into Adam’s talent ability….the ABOVE song (From Nica’s post) was sung at Fantasy Springs. What’s amazing about this song is…..it was an acoustic version of the one he sang on Idol for Rock Week. The extraordinary thing is….Adam arranged this song IN HIS CAR ON THE WAY TO THE SHOW! When he got to Fantasy Springs, he didn’t even have time to rehearse with the band. They played it on stage , for the very first time and Adam NAILED IT! Once again showcasing how much of a musical genius this man is!

Enjoy your ride , Mark….it will take you places you have never been before! 🙂

  29. Thank you for your article and welcome in the Glamily!! 🙂
I’ve been a Glambert since 2010 and I have to say: he changed my life. He has got the ability to rewrite all of us lives.
I was lucky enough to see him in Vienna last year and wow! First time in my life I was happy, free and able to change. Change myself and my life.

HIs voice and personality just melted into my heart. I nearly can’t live without him.

I love how he can perform the songs… he doesn’t just sing it. He performs! Every single concert was different. And I think, this is what we can call magic in these times.

Thank you for your love and support! I am always so happy when I hear people talk about Adam.

GlamKisses and GlamHugz from Hungary (from a HunGlambert) ❤

  30. Sheesh, Mark, I bet you are blown away by the fanatic followers of Adam Lambert. Can you blame us? Thanks for documenting your discovery of Adam. We’ve all been through it one way or another and at first fell in love with his voice and performances and then got to know the guy under all that and fell even harder. We are all looking forward to hearing his new music.

  31. Thank you for the great article! Agree to what all other fans said. My top facts about Adam is his courage, in singing, performing and living his life, and his generosity.

Also, he is the best interviewee. He is engaging, intelligent, quick witted, eloquent, kind and he has this incredible laugh. He always makes people laugh. He has a gift to make people happy, not only with his singing, but just by being himself. Love him to pieces. Welcome to the Glamily!

    One of his fearless performances:

  32. I wandered over to your facebook page. You have a good voice. I like your version of Drops of Jupiter better than Monahan’s. You have a rich voice and I like how you put your spin on the songs. I downloaded them. You are now official on my ipod.

  33. Here’s another fact about ADAM, Mark … there is a young DJ in New Zealand … Liam McEwan … who is such a fan of ADAM that he has an program dedicated only to ADAM’s music every week … the ADAM LAMBERT HOUR …

    http://www.theflea.co.nz

You can hear a lot of ADAM’s pre-Idol music on this program also …

  34. Mark, Some day ask us interesting facts about Glamberts. This is an amazing fandom you have entered. Welcome to our family!

I especially love your cover of “Crazy.”

  35. gosh, too bad Neil Lambert’s blog was deleted. At first – before Adam’s gig at Idol – he had like five clicks a day. Wham, Adam started singing “Bohemian Rapsody” in that first audition, people started googling him, found Neil’s blog and his views exploded like yours. I wish those entries were still around…good times!

  36. Makes my heart full to see Adam being recognized all over the world. Your article was terrific and really hits on what all Adam fans feel on the first listen! Thanks for putting it out there!

The added plus is that we have all been introduced to “new” artists through the Adam connection! Welcome aboard the wild ride that is Adam Lambert!!

  37. Mark, welcome to the Glamily !!!
All the facts are true but one very important fact was left out. Whataya Want From Me from FYE album was nominated for a Grammy, he didn’t win (Still don’t understand why)but he had the honor of at least getting the nomination and he’s going to be a mentor on Nov 13 on Logo channel.

  38. Welcome to the newly converted Mark,

I hope you get to see Adam live someday, the energy he gives off is palpable, and drew many of us back to multiple concerts. I have never flown to see an artist before, but when he was touring I flew 6 times to
see him. Worth every cent and more.

SleepWalker in St Agathe,Quebec July 29.2011

  39. Mark, welcome to the Glamily! You are in the company of MILLIONS who have discovered the best vocal performer onthe stage in decades. Please help us spread the word to the others. Adam is never boring, always controversial, and simply the best singer out there. Hope you have checked both his pre-Idol and Idol performances. He is a chameleon in his look but never compromises on quality. If you haven’t heard Pick U Up, listen to it. It’s a vocal tour-de-force sung with uber-vocals, wit and humor.

      • Oh, I love that too, especially the giggle at the end.
What a fun blog to discover, love your instant reaction to The Queen performance, love how you were Glammed, and love all the comments from the Glamily … we are a passionate bunch for sure.
I’m going to check out your music – I’m suspecting it’s good because you appear to have very good taste 😉

Let me add one of my favorite Adam videos, pre-Idol, in fact a New Years Eve club gig just before his Idol journey. One of my favorite songs anyway, but he gives it such a human touch and actually wipes a tear at the end.

  40. Mark, THANK YOU for the great post. There is another Glamily term:

“Down the Rabbit Hole” which is not only an Adam song (Bonus track from his first album, a fun song I love!) but for his fans it means when a person either falls head over heals for Adam and/or in my case.. I started out to do a quick check for any Adam news this morning and here I am 20 minutes later reading your blog and listening to Adam music = down the rabbit hole.

And SLEEPWALKER!!! Glad someone posted up-thread (SW) and Fantasy Springs WWL (I was there) and … well you see what I mean. Need to get things done in Real Life yet here I am:-) down the rabbit hole…

  41. Thanks Mark!! Awesome job here. I love my fellow glamberts for ‘filling in the blanks’ too! I plan to listen to more of your music on your fb site – very little time on it, but so far ~ very nice.

  42. Came back to re-visit your blog and see what others have been saying. Love this walk down memory lane. Enjoy your time in Amsterdam with friends, which reminds me like most things now – everything seems to come back to Adam. He was feeling a bit more ‘free’ that night in Amsterdam, and the show was one of the friskiest and naughtiest stops along international GNT. Most of set at shows were from FYE, but these two closing covers were insane.

    Exhibit A – Purple Haze

Exhibit B – Whole Lotta Love

  43. Hi Mark, welcome to the fandom. We will probably always be Glamberts, but Adam is certainly not just a glam artist. You could find an unlimited number of posts and videos that would substantiate his vocal talent and his amazing ability to sing anything. Have you seen his version of the American national anthem?

I agree with all the posts that say it is not his music alone that makes us fans. He is the kind of person that you just cannot help but fall for. One of the definitions of charm is the ability to make someone feel good about themselves. Adam is the most charming person I have ever met (yes, lucky me). Adam can look you in the eye, make you laugh and give you the feeling of being on top of the world. He truly cares about other people and that shines through.

Of course, when he performs, that other purely sexual side of his personality can make one feel pretty good, too!

  44. Brian May of Queen said this after hearing Adam’s recording of Time For Miracles for the 2012 soundtrack! 🙂

“I have to say I was completely blown away … it’s truly sensational.

  45. Welcome to the Glamily Mark. It’s a great group to belong to…..we’re not crazy just passionate about the world listening to and accepting this truly talented singer. I am older, married with three kids, and have never followed someone so passionately. I’m tired of the radio filled with auto-tuned singers who are popular for the wrong reasons. Adam is open and we accept who he is. Freddie would have loved him I’m sure (I love Queen). This will be quite a bumpy ride for you but worth it…..

  46. Welcome to the Adam Lambert fandom, Mark. 🙂

I’ve been listening to YOUR music, and particularly like the “These are the Days” cover…..you have a lovely tone to your voice.

  47. Adam Lambert has been doing musical theater before American Idol

He was in the production of Hair, Wicked, The Ten Commandments & a few more!! Check out some of his performance on u tube , u will find Adam singing “The Prayer” at a Jewish telethon, & “Is Anybody Listening” Into “The Deep” from the Ten Commandments ,” W hen Will You Be Mine” from Wicket & more..”Brigadoon” is a beautiful song which show cases his vocal range. He’s also performed in the Zodiac Show, check out his performance of ” A Change Is Going To Come” showcases a very different Adam in regards to his look! All the above shows Adam’s versatility & check out his interviews he’s also a well spoken ,intelligent & caring human being!!!!

  48. Mark, here’s some fun stuff:

This was done right after the Idol finale when the press had their panties in a bunch speculating about Adam’s sexuality:

And Michelle Collins is hysterical, especially her Martini Minute segments:

  49. I forgot to mention , just like u when I first heard Adam Lambert sing it was
on American Idol , to be honest with u iv never watch this show before, that night one of my family members was flicking through channels , I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw this beautiful looking man dressed in white standing at the top of this long staircase , as soon as he open his mouth & the words came out OMG! I literately froze in my tracks! I grabbed the remote control and increased the volume and sat my ass down on the sofa , time sat still for a few minutes little did i know that my life was about to change, by the way the song was called “Feeling Good” by the end of the song I was shocked! , thinking to myself hell in the world did he hold that note for so long, all I could say was ” wholly s….OMG! This guy is unbelievable how come no one ever signed him up? He’s the only artist that I know that can sing with no music! His voice is truly his instrument !The rest is history its almost three years later n here we are!

  50. Sorry – posted wrong link to pre-Idol Heaven On Their Minds performance earlier! This is the right one. Unbelievable final third.

  51. ahhh…the first time! I was hooked from when he sang ‘Black or White’ on Idol…loved the passion in that performance, the near tears at the end….I saw Adam live in New Zealand and then flew to Australia to see him again because once was not enough. You HAVE to get to a live show Mark, because his voice just fills the venue…it is a thing of incredible power and beauty. Of course, like many of the fans above, we love him for more than his voice. As we got to know him, we discovered how beautiful his spirit is…and it doesn’t hurt that he’s smokin’ hot and sexy!

  52. Great blog.

I particularly like “Every once in a while, an artist comes along with a voice that makes you stop in your tracks. It was only after the after the performance had finished that I realised I’d actually stopped what I was doing to give this guy my full attention.”.

You’re far from the first person Adam has had that effect on. Myself included.

Welcome to the Mad World of Adam Lambert fandom!!!

Just a minor correction to point 9. Adam reprised Mad World in the final when the remaining two got to perform their favourite performance of the competition but Simon Cowell’s standing ovation (the ONLY one he gave throughout his nine years on American Idol) was when Adam performed it the first time in ‘Year of Birth’ week (top 8). LOL, Simon’s words that night are etched on my brain …… “The bad news is we’re running out of time, the good news is I’m the only one who’s going to be talking but I think words are unnecessary because I want to give you a standing ovation.”.

Now off to listen to some more of your stuff. I really like your version of Drops of Jupiter.

  53. Hi mark
    welcome to the glamily ❤
thanks for everything you said about Adam. he is my first artist I follow so close and do whatever I can to support him, also I couldn't read all the comments I'm sure they are all full of new information for you

but I want to tell you he has done more than 115 show on his glam nation tour worldwide WITHOUT canceling any shows even when he had cold, his vocal cords are strong *knock on wood*
and he always gives his fans more than 100% every night

    Thanks

  54. Millions of people are inspired by Adam Lambert! The stories are beautiful, amazing, exciting, fun, touching, and infinite! Adam represents and promotes LOVE! He encourages everyone to be true to who you are! Adam is authentic, genuine and humble! He promotes acceptance. Listen to his song, “Outlaws Of Love”. He is extremely generous and compassionate! I had the pleasure of meeting Adam Lambert backstage when I won a local radio contest which was a charity fund raiser. Adam is sweet, warm, welcoming and very sincere! He radiates warmth and love! He has helped raise tremendous donations for a variety of causes…Donors Choose,Charity Water and The Trevor Project just to name a few. His signed limited edition Peace Pendant with his words “Believe in you” benefit “The Trevor Project”, a national suicide prevention intervention program for LGBT youth. Adam Lambert was recently honored at the EQCA Equality California Awards. He was also nominated for the “Do Something Awards” in part because he donated all proceeds from the sales of his “Aftermath Remix” to The Trevor Project. Adam participate in the “It Gets Better” campaign in hopes to help LGBT youth overcome bullying. Adam was also nominated for a Grammy Award 2011 for his hit song, “Whataya Want From Me”! Adam “connects” and brings people from all over the world together! He encourages all people to be “Connected with love” and is a beautiful example of this!

  56. WOW!!! Thank you Mark. So excited about this article. Adam Lambert is an “Artistic Genius”. He is the most amazing singer and person you will ever know. Us Glamberts are so passionate about Adam its ridiculous. Wait until you see and hear him live. He will knock your socks off. 🙂

  57. What a wonderful article. All of us in the Glamily feel just like Meatloaf. It just blows me away how people don’t get what an amazing singer Adam Lamber truly is. He is also an electrifying performing. I hope people like you can help the world see what a gift he has. On top of that, those of us who have followed Adam threw every interview, and all across the world – he is just a super person as well. Geniunely nice and full of love.

  59. Mark

Welcome aboard! I have been on your blog for an hour , read every comment and of course went down memory lane again with all the videos. (I have them all stored anyway, but had to click again) lol. In other words, this is what adam does to you, you just can’t get enough of him. I have never followed any artist in my life to this extent. It’s late but I will now go over to your FB and listen to you! Once again, great article, so heart-warming to read especially as all us glamberts know all to well all the crititism that adam has had to face. We are a fiercly protective bunch but that’s one of the reasons I love being a glambert!

  60. First of all, hi!

2nd of all well yay that you are if nothing else intrigued by the responses you have gotten, the Glambert swarm can happen randomly, try tweeting you saw Adam in an airport and you feed clog instantaneously LOL it freaks some ppl out haha

Its so frustrating to know how good he is and not have people get it so when someone does we’re all like yay YES!! I know, right? amazing

I found your comments interesting and it reminded me of this from 5/10, a wisened jaded DJ introducing Adam at a show hosted by a local radio station……..similar wording I think:

i love having knowledgeable ppl like you in the fandom cuz true be told while a huge music fan I dont know much more than I know what I like so to hear the informed talk about technique or thing is interesting to me.

I adore Adams voice and have not stopped listening to show must go on for days, literally but I wouldnt be such a huge fan if he were’tnt such a great guy and just cazy and fun

Whataya Want From me was a top 10 or better hit in 22 countries around teh world but never charted in teh UK the radio shut out was disappointing and something I just didnt get, we are hoping this exposure gives him a shot with the new musice do out soon

so thanks for the post and welcome!!

    • I absolutely agree with you re UK airplay. There’s absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t be enormous here. Hopefully a Jools Holland acoustic performance will do the trick. I think one of Adam’s trademark screams will be all it takes!

  61. FACT: Adam is the sweetest, most down-to-earth, and humble guy on earth. Proof: please watch this latest sneak peak of him being a mentor on Majors and Minors to be aired this Sunday:

It’s only one of hundreds of pieces of evidence.

  62. Mark along with Adams singing ability the next best thing about him is his personality. Check out his interviews. He is a reporters dream…funny, quick witted, himble, sincere and interesting. I remember one or two interviews where he is applying makeup to the girl reporters, or his interview on American Idol w/ Kris Allen where they crack each other up. Adam is the rare human who unlike most of us w/ a few redeeming qualities has got a whole boatload of redeeming qualities. I envy his ease in interacting w/ ppl. Welcome to the adventure.

  63. I’m guessing somewhere in all the comments SOMEONE sent you links to to Adam’s performances of CRAZY since it is a song you have recorded.

the most FUN performance of CRAZY.

Upright Cafe performance. I love, love his Upright performances, some of which were just a month before Idol was broadcast.

There are more, but this is a sample.

  64. Mark…welcome to the Adam Lambert fandom!!!!! Adam is the most humble, kind, sincere, generous, intelligent and down-to-earth person you would ever want to meet. He has the voice of an angel sent from heaven. To add to #8 on your list, Adam is the only idol to HEADLINE his own INTERNATIONAL TOUR to promote his FIRST ALBUM release. He did 116 shows in six months; never missed a performance,, and sold out almost all of the venues. Usually, he would do two or three shows and then only have one day to rest before he did the next two or three shows. His voice never waivered, his pitch was always perfect, and his energy was ALWAYS 200%!!!!!!! As far as his Glamberts are concerned, Adam is PERFECT, and he can do no wrong!!!! Enjoy the ride!!!!!!!!

  66. Welcome to the Glamily!

A favourite fact of mine about Adam is his love for his fans. An example was when his tour was in Denmark he spent extra time in the freezing and rainy November night to sign things, take pictures and talk to Glamberts who hadn’t been lucky enough to acquire a VIP ticket with the M&G!

    Plus he gives amazing hugs!

  67. Adam loves and appreciates his fans as much as they do him. When with 19E, he would get huge stacks of fanmail and autograph requests. (I think his mom helped out at that time by managing this.) Well, they carefully held every single picture and letter — sometimes for months until he finally returned home to LA from touring — and then he made sure to respond to every single request with a personal autograph. They did not lose even one. He has a true respect for people. He is so grounded.

  68. I read thru the above and don’t believe I saw any mention of Adam’s Grammy nomination for Whataya Want From Me. So thought I would.

    Yes Welcome to the Glamily!!!

  69. wow, Mark… seek & ye shall find – particularly concerning Adam & it’s sent out via Twitter. welcome to the Glamily.

yet, as with any family, members differ. I’m late to this party as Adam himself (as well as certain members within his art tribe) are who I follow, otherwise my feed becomes clogged. (blasphemy! … don’t get me wrong, I was one of Adam’s 1st followers as I was already there, but I digress).

fact is, Adam interests me most not only for his exquisite vocals, but also for what he holds dear. he is a total hippie dyed in LA SoCal sensibilities – a kindred spirit – with long friendships amongst other artists with like values.

Burning Man & The Zodiac Show; Idol was merely a platform utilized to launch.

(oh, BTW, rather in a hurry so using the gravatar already recognized. @shaunna2 on the Twitter – promise I’ll check you out more this evening)

anyhoo, here’s my favorite of his – pre-Idol:

  70. Hi Mark – Welcome to the Glamily. Since Adam will have a long and successful career you’re early to the party. I missed the Glamswarm on your twitter earlier so I read all the comments on your blog todate and thought I’d add a couple more facts.

    1. Other Idol firsts: first Idol contestant on Entertainment Weekly cover before the finals, first Rolling Stone cover before first album released (both sold out obviously);
    2. He’s had his own episodes of E! True Hollywood Story and VH1’s Behind the Music;
    3. he is extremely generous in praising and promoting other artists – whether known or unknown artists. Sadly, this is not usually reciprocated;
    4. “A Change is Gonna Come” has special meaning for him and all 3 public performances of his song has been mindblowing – this is the pre-idol version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrcAWtVhb0c . I believe you have been rec’d the Idol and the GNT versions.
    5. I’m in the PR industry and I LOVE his media savvy!! He’s a publicist’s wet dream!
Here’s an article on point: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2009/06/10/cashing-in-on-coming-out.html I love how the RS writer said “And then he just completely re-branded himself.” She totally GOT him!

I’m not sure if anyone referred you to the AMA ‘incident’ – Google will help you out there. This is the short story.
http://m.nctimes.com/entertainment/music/article_4502fe5c-291a-57e8-a341-d422e0700024.html But what I loved most about the whole episode was how he turned it around and claimed double standards! And he’s right!

So you got the gist of it – we love the MAN – not just the voice or the music. The whole caboodle! Nicest guy in the music industry!

PS. loved your covers of DoJ and Crazy

  71. Welcome to the GLAMNATiON ! Your reaction to Adam’s voice is exactly the same that each of us experienced. Afterwards, we’re left grasping for superlatives to express the mystical connection that occurs . Yours was Mad World. Mine was Ring Of Fire. What happens is that we fall instantaneously in Love , we’re giddy, goofy, and we want to share our love with the world! Welcome to our world, you’re one of us!

  72. Love this. . and love that Adam won you over with his fabulous voice. He’s incredible. He had me at Mad World! Can’t watch your favorite video (though I’ve watched it dozens of times). . Fremantle have blocked it. .
